On the Edge

I hiked down to Windhoek yesterday. The reason that I mention this is that it was the most absurd hike that I have experienced yet in my time in Namibia. I was waiting by the magic speed bump, the ultimate place to get a hike to the south, for an hour and a half with no one so much as giving a shaggy looking volunteer a second look. My patience was thin. Finally three men driving a flatbed stopped. There was no room in the cab. The price was right and the weather good, so throwing comfort and caution to the wind I placed my things on and hopped in. 8 hours later, sun burnt and wind blown, I pulled into Windoek and the men were nice enough to drop me off right in front of my lodgings for the evening. It sounds strange, but there is no better way to see Namibia. I had room to stretch out, a good book, and a sleeping bag.

From Windoek, the bus leaves for Durban, South Africa tonight. The ocean is calling. Not having been to the beach in quite some time, compounded with the fact that I live in the middle of a semi-desert, this promises to be a most enjoyable experience. I am travelling with some fellow volunteers, and we are aslo meeting some friends down in Durban. No worries, pictures will be taken.
